First United Methodist Church - Lubbock, Texas

First United Methodist Church offers two traditional worship services every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. in the Sanctuary. The services include scripture, prayer, singing of well-loved hymns, a time for children, baptisms, and a sermon.

On one Sunday each month our three children’s choirs (FUMC Choir Boys, FUMC Choir Girls and FUMC Chapel Choir) and our youth choir (FUMC Wesley Singers) fill the choir loft. On other Sundays we feature ensembles from the Chancel Choir.

At the 10:50 a.m. service, singing is led by our exceptional Chancel Choir, a group of ninety people that has toured all over the world. This choir is one of the finest church choirs in the country.

Our traditional services also feature music by our hand bell groups, vocal soloists, a brass ensemble and other instrumental musicians; and our organist leads hymn singing on the wonderful Forrest Memorial Pipe Organ.

First United Methodist has long been a leader in offering the best traditional worship services in the country. With the opening of its new Christian Life Center (CLC), First Church joins a growing number of churches offering a weekly contemporary worship service. Beginning at 9:45 am, this service is called The First Light Worship Hour. It meets in the Great Hall of the new building. This new space features two large video screens and stage with the latest in video, sound and computer technology.

Since music is one of the most important dimensions of the First Light Service, it offers a mixture of contemporary Christian music, old time gospel and hymns. Aa group of some of the finest professional musicians in this area. The band plays all types of music: rock, country, traditional hymns, classical and musical presentations.

Evensong is a service that originated in the ancient offices (daily prayer services) of the church. It combines the traditions of two offices: Vesper (Evening Prayer) which uses the Magnificat as a canticle and Compline (Close of Day Service) which uses the Nunc Dimittis as a canticle. Traditionally, the choir offers the canticles, psalms, and motets while the congregation joins in the hymns and responses. During the last century, Evensong has emerged as a liturgy of rare and mystical beauty in which the Word is illuminated by music. It is sung regularly in churches throughout the country and daily in many places in England.

Music for our thirty minute Evensong Services is led by Choro Andro, our unique men’s voices choir.
