At First Baptist Church, we recognize that music is one of God's greatest gifts to humanity. Consequently, music plays a vital role in the life of our church, enriching our praises and thanksgivings in worship, being a means of proclaiming the gospel message to others, and being an indispensable element of Christian formation within the community of faith.
First Baptist offers two worship services on Sunday morning:
Traditional Worship Service
The traditional worship service combines hymns, anthems and tunes from the past with contemporary styles from today. This service is led by choirs, soloists, organ, piano and other instruments. It also includes special emphasis based on themes or religious celebrations. It meets at 9:00 a.m. every Sunday morning.
CONNECTIONS: Contemporary Worship Service
Led by a praise team, this service uses praise choruses and music that is carefully selected to enhance worship in a contemporary style.
Our Music Ministry
The Chancel Choir sings in the 8:45 a.m. traditional sunday worship service. They sing an eclectic mix of music, from renaissance chorales to classic contemporary sacred anthems to gospel selections. Special seasonal music programs and an annual "Pops" concert are also presented.
The First Baptist FLEX Band is an instrumental and vocal group composed largely of middle and high school students. The FLEX Band performs a variety of praise and worship and Contemporary Christian music. They lead worship for youth-themed worship services and occasionally provide accompaniment for the Youth Choir.
The First Baptist Orchestra is a group of instrumentalists that accompany hymns and occasionally perform special music and accompany the adult choir in the 8:45 a.m. traditional worship service.
First Baptist enjoys an excellent reputation for its Children's Choir program, staffed by caring and capable teachers and directors. Children learn music fundamentals, biblical truths and age-appropriate anthems. They also discover the rich heritage of the church's music through hymns. Choirs present two programs per year.
The First Baptist Adult Handbell Choir is a fifteen-member ensemble ringing a five-octave set of Schulmerick handbells. They perform regularly in worship services and community events. They also participate in handbell festivals and mass rings at various times throughout the year.
The Youth Choir is composed of students in grades 7-12. This group sings regularly in the worship services, sometimes accompanied by the FLEX Band.
The First Baptist Praise Band is an instrumental and vocal group providing music for the 11:10 a.m. contemporary worship service. They perform a diverse repertoire including praise and worship choruses, and original compositions by worship leader Scott Willis.
The Skinner Pipe Organ at First Baptist was installed in 1925 and has been used since that time for worship.
