First-Centenary United Methodist Church - Chattanooga, TN
First-Centenary United Methodist is a church with a heart in the heart of a busy city. Its steeple points the thoughts of passersby to Heaven; its members are commissioned to work for God on earth.
The mainstay of the First-Centenary Music Ministry is our Chancel Choir. Some members have been active for more than 50 years! This marvelous choir sings just about every week in the 10:45 worship service, and is occasionally called into service at 8:30. Seasons of the church year may call for additional worship, and it is most often the Chancel Choir that provides ministry through music at these services. We have enjoyed musical collaborations with other choirs, have invited nationally known clinicians to direct workshops, and have commissioned new music from a few of our favorite composers. Repertoire sung covers a wide spectrum, from global songs to major choral works. We have been accompanied by conga drums and orchestras.
Children's Choirs
Cherub Choir - 4yr - Kindergarten.
Celestial Choir - 1st and 2nd grades.
Carol Choir - 3rd - 5th grades.
Music Makers - (plucked Dulcimers).
Our children are exposed to music from all around the world, they play recorders, music makers, boom wackers, xylophones, glockenspiels and drums. They make noise! They learn hymns of the faith and new songs for their faith journeys. They learn some music theory. They commit to weekly rehearsal and worship leadership. They are active and involved in worship and in the church.
Youth Choirs
Covenant Ringers Youth Handbell Choir (6th-12th).
Cantad! (6th-12th).Cantad! is a group that likes to sing different styles of music. We try to participate in worship about once a month.
Handbells
Our Chancel Ringers, a 5 octave handbell group, have a history of excellence, providing beautiful music for our worship services. They ring in the balcony, in the aisles, they even play while they walk.
Our Aldersgate Vibrations Handbell Choir likes to break forth and ring when invited by groups in and out of the church. They play for luncheons, nursing homes, retirement homes, and occasionally for worship at First-Centenary.Our services are televised weekly.
