Saint Peter's Catholic Church - Columbia, South Carolina
St. Peter's parish celebrated its 175th anniversary of service to our Lord and the people of central South Carolina in 1996.
Founded as an outreach to Irish canal workers in 1821, the mission has always been committed to Christian growth, education, and service to the poor. St. Peter's Catholic Church is South Carolina's oldest parish outside of Charleston, and it supports a diverse congregation. Parishioners travel from forty-one zip code areas each Sunday to celebrate Eucharist as a community.
The Music Ministry of historic Saint Peter’s Church reflects the vibrancy of our parish community. Saint Paul admonishes the church to proclaim her witness in “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” Our musical diversity is truly a reflection of the Church: catholic. Instrumentalists augment our regular choristers on high feast days of the church. Our typical Sunday celebration of the Holy Mass is led by the following musical forces:
• Saturday at 5:30 PM: Cantor or Schola with Organ
• Sunday at 8:30 AM: Cantor or Schola with Organ
• Sunday at 10 AM: Gallery Choir and/or Children’s Choir
with Organ
• Sunday at Noon: Cantor or Schola
• First Sundays of the Month at Noon: in Spanish with
Coro Hispano
• Sunday at 5:30 PM: Contemporary Ensemble
Our Peragallo pipe organ was dedicated by Francis Klein, OCSO on 23 March 2003. Previous pipe organs have included a ten and one half rank Kilgen from 1908, and a twenty-six rank Wicks from 1984. The instrument has thirty-six ranks.
