Covenant Presbyterian Church - Scranton, Pennsylvania
Covenant Church is a vital community of Christians of all ages and occupations located near downtown Scranton. We are an active congregation with an ever growing Sunday School; an energetic youth group; choirs for adults, youth and children (hand bells, too); hands-on service projects in our community; and so many chances to come together for fun and food!
Our Presbyterian roots keep us grounded in Worship and the Word of God and ever desiring to serve each other and our neighbors as Christ teaches us.
The French neo-Gothic architecture, and Tiffany, LaFarge and DeAscenzo stained glass of our building and the location and history of our congregation creates the aura of a "cathedral" type of church. We expect a liturgical Sunday morning service, (in keeping with the denomination's Book of Common Worship), which follows the lectionary calendar of readings and special days but is conducted with warmth and humor in a multi-sensory style We modify this only for inclusion of a children's message and seasonal contributions from our very active youth choral and drama programs. We have also used our annual Lenten and Advent worship series as opportunities to try creative new approaches to worship such as the music from the ecumenical community in Taize, France. We have a movable Labyrinth, patterned on the one in Chartres Cathedral, in France which is available one day a week for use in individual prayer and reflection.
Covenant Church supports an active music program. It consists of seven choirs, three singing and four handbell/choirchime. Its' major focus is upon providing music which enhances the worship services of the congregation. To accomplish this, the choirs provide musical leadership at Sunday morning worship from September through June and additional services as needed. In addition, vocal soloists, small groups and instrumental soloists/groups provide leadership. Covenant church is blessed with a three manual Schlicker pipe organ, a two manual Allen organ, two Steinway grand pianos, a four octave set of Malmark handbells, a two octave set of Schulmerich handbells and a three octave set of Malmark choir chimes.
Historically the choirs have performed musicals ("Joseph the Carpenter", "B is for Bethlehem", Vaughan William's "The First Nowell" to name a few) and madrigal dinners. "Covenant Kids" have performed musicals such as "Oh Jonah", "Technicolor Promise", "100% Chance of Rain", "The Three Trees" and others.
Covenant Church welcomes anyone into our fellowship of faith who find their hope for life in both this world and the next, in the person and teachings of Jesus Christ.
