The First English Evangelical Lutheran Church has served downtown Pittsburgh since its founding in 1837 as the First English-speaking Lutheran church west of the Alleghenies. Its members come from far and near to participate in its Christian witness in the heart of the city: a witness that is faithful to Holy Scripture and to the historic Lutheran Confessions. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is at the center of its life, providing direction, comfort, and hope.
We welcome all who worship with us. If you are seeking a church home in Pittsburgh, we invite you to become part of our downtown ministry. A coffee hour is held each Sunday following the 11:00 a.m. service.
The purpose of music in Lutheran worship is to enable the worshiping members of the body of Christ to give praise to their Lord and King and to assist in the proclamation of the Gospel and the celebrations of the sacraments. Martin Luther's three great contributions to the music of worship were: The retention with modifications of the historic mass and offices, the increased participation of the laity in the services, and the pursuit of excellence in the type and execution of music performed in worship. (Manual on the Liturgy, pp. 78-79.) First Lutheran Church is deeply committed to maintaining a program of traditional sacred music. Through choral offerings, organ repertoire, and instrumental selections, we strive to present the finest sacred music from many periods in music history.
Lutherans have valued the gift of music perhaps more than any other community of believers. Our tradition includes a vast treasury of music to enhance our proclamation and celebration of the Gospel.
