Our Music Program

From the 1863 organ, to the double quartet formed in 1912, to the upgraded Schantz organ installed in 1947, to the handbell choirs introduced in 1971 to today's inspiring performances under the direction of Director of Music/Organist, music has always played an important part in the life of High Street Christian Church. In worship at High Street, or in performances at E.J. Thomas Hall or with the Akron Symphony, the caliber of musicianship has touched generations of members and non-members alike.

Sanctuary Choir:
The Sanctuary Choir is a wonderful, dedicated group of 20-25 people that prepares special music for the Traditional Worship Service and other special services throughout the year. The choir is made up of people who offer their special talents to glorify God in service and in love by singing a great variety of music. Often heard during worship and other special services are sacred oratorios and major works, traditional and contemporary sacred anthems and many arrangements of hymns and spirituals. Instrumental soloists and ensembles frequently accompany the choir throughout the year.

Organist:
Our organist provides the organ music and leads the congregation in the singing of hymns for the traditional worship service and other special services throughout the year. The service music offered by the organist is classical and traditional in nature. High St. Christian Church also has a harpsichord, which is used to accompany special music at special services.

Soloists:
Choir members or invited guests provide solos at special times throughout the year for the traditional service.

Praise Team:
The Praise Team is a wonderful, dedicated ensemble of people who offer their talents in a number of ways preparing special music for the Contemporary Worship Service. The members of this group sing, play guitars, drums, keyboard and other instruments, leading the congregation in contemporary praise music and worship.

Chancel Handbell Choir:
The Chancel Handbell Choir is a super group of handbell ringers who have had some experience playing bells. This group prepares challenging music that is played during worship services and at other events in the community.

Praise Team Handbell Choir:
This handbell choir is another group of dedicated ringers who enjoy providing beautiful bell music for the Contemporary Worship Service.

CYF Handbell Choir and Chi Rho Handbell Choir:
The CYF and Chi Rho Handbell Choirs are groups that were formed for the students involved in the high school and middle school youth groups. The groups offer special music for both worship services periodically through the year.

Youth Choir:
The Youth Choir is an ensemble made up of high school and middle school students who really enjoy singing. The choir sings and rehearses many songs, some of which become polished for presentation during worship.
