St. George's Episcopal Church is an historic and vibrant Christian Community. We are a Colonial Anglican parish in the Episcopal Church, founded in 1735.
Without a doubt, the musical liturgy at St. George's continues to shine as one of the few unique churches who hold steadfast in their maintenance of traditional, classical-sacred repertoire as well as current compositions from serious composers. In these days when a large majority of churches have succumbed to lesser musical forms of "praise music", St. George's stands as a beacon of hope that the fine masterworks of Pope Gregory, Palestrina, Byrd, Bach etc. will not be lost from the Christian Church forever.
Our Adult Choir
The St. Cecilia Choir of St. George's Church produces high-quality sacred music for the liturgies at St. George's Church. For most Sunday Services, the choir prepares 2 Anthems, A Complete Setting of the Mass Ordinary, as well as Chanting the Minor Propers of the Mass, and Hymn Descant Ornamentation.
Staples of their repertoire include serious compositions by great composers including: Carrissimi, Durufle, Corfe, Faure, Widor, Bairstow, Bach, Handl, Handel, Pitoni, Mozart, Tye, Haydn, Doland, Rutter, Titcombe, Stanford, Howells, Gabrielli, Palestrina, Brahms, as well as numerous compositions by Brian Hoffman.
Children's Choir
Another integral aspect in the tradition of musical excellence at St. George's is the St. Nicholas Children's Choir. Staples of their repertoire include compositions by composers such as: Bach, Handel, Mozart, Brahms, Lenel, as well as a mass setting Missa Brevis No. 4, written especially for the choir by their director.
Our Organ
Built and installed in 1982, the Organ of St. George's provides the accompaniment to congregation and choir, as well as its use as a recital instrument. Situated in the choir loft directly above the West Doors of the Church, the Organ is housed in 3 separate chambers and features a striking silver facade crowned with a powerful Trumpet-en-chamade. The 3-manual console is built from hand-rubbed mahogany and features an unusual configuration of two separate Swell Divisions, each controlled from the Swell keyboard.Visit our web site to listen to our choirs, and organ.
