Plymouth Congregational Church - Minneapolis,MN

Plymouth Church is a community of progressive Christians whose values include liberal theology, social justice, traditional worship and the arts as integral to spiritual life.

Located in the heart of Minneapolis for 150 years, Plymouth draws members and worshippers from the entire metro region. This diverse and exciting congregation offers extraordinary programming for children and youth, stimulating experiences in adult education, compassionate pastoral care, an array of opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship that both challenges the mind and touches the soul.

Plymouth’s Sanctuary Service at 10:30 (10 a.m. June-Aug.) is known for extraordinary music, challenging preaching, thoughtful prayers and a spirit that reaches deep and draws up a richness of gifts within the congregation. Though the order of service is steeped in a tradition that particularly honors the preached word, there are other elements – sacraments, prayers, readings and, from our many choirs, special music – that fill our worship hour. Both head and heart are engaged, and there’s always the inspiration of seeing the face of God in our gathered congregation.

Plymouth's First Service at 9 a.m. in the chapel, held September-May, fosters a spirit of informality while upholding Plymouth’s excellence in worship and music. Plymouth ministers, guest clergy and lay theologians offer brief sermons that challenge the heart and mind. Each service features volunteer musicians of all ages drawn from the diverse pool of talent in the congregation. Children are fully included and music is drawn from a large spectrum of our sacred heritage.

Vespers
This Sunday evening service is designed to allow people a quiet, reflective time with beautiful music, poetry and scripture. We incorporate the lighting of candles, individual prayer and optional anointing with oil on the hands or forehead. This service is typically held quarterly at 6:45 on a Sunday evening.

OUR MUSIC MINISTRY
Senior Choir

The Plymouth Choir sings for Sunday services throughout the year, except during August. The Choir sings two anthems most Sundays, covering the range of sacred choral repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day.

Youth Choir
This choir, for youth in grades 7 through 12, sings choral pieces ranging from folk hymns and spirituals to contemporary pieces, in languages including Spanish, Latin, Hebrew and Nguni. They perform in the sanctuary five or six times a year.

Adult Handbells
Handbell ringing has been a Plymouth music tradition since 1973. The main objective is to provide music for worship on a monthly basis and Christmas Eve at the late service. Usually there’s one community service performance each year and one or two other events at Plymouth, including performing with the Plymouth Choir. Their music is full of variety – classical, hymns and handbell originals.

Choir School
This Wednesday evening program provides classes for children and youth in Plymouth’s musical and fine arts tradition. It offers opportunities to participate in vocal and bell choirs, all of which participate in Sunday morning worship services throughout the program year.

Plymouth’s Organ
From its earliest days, each of Plymouth’s sanctuaries has housed a pipe organ featuring the names of some of America’s finest builders of their generation, including Hook & Hastings, Aeolian-Skinner and, since 1981, Holtkamp. The present organ is renown as one of the finest in Minnesota, equally attuned for hymn playing, anthem accompaniment and solo organ repertoire.

VocalEssence
Recognized internationally for innovative exploration of music for voices and instruments, VocalEssence was founded by Philip Brunelle in 1969 under the name Plymouth Music Series as a Plymouth Church arts outreach program. Each year the organization presents an engaging collection of concerts featuring the 120-voice VocalEssence Chorus and the 32-voice Ensemble Singers along with soloists and instrumentalists. In 1979, the Plymouth Music Series was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation governed by its own independent board of directors. It continues to have offices, rehearsals and its Christmas concerts at Plymouth.
