First Congregational Church - Battle Creek, Michigan

Our Mission:
We are a a vital, growing community of faith. Love, acceptance, and grace pervade our worship, fellowship, and outreach ministries.

Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir provides a high quality of choral music for all worship services. It has a membership of 30 singers encompassing a wide background of music talent that ranges from instrumental and piano study, choral experience in high school or college, to advanced vocal training. The choir sings a variety of music that includes everything from early music to the present day, spirituals, cantatas, and classics of sacred choral repertoire.

Handbells
The church has two handbell choirs. The Plymouth Handbell Choir encompasses ages from high school to adult. It plays monthly for church worship.

The Dayspring Ringers play a wide variety of musical selections, and perform numerous times each year for various groups, including nursing homes.

Church School Choir
The Church School Choir is composed of the Sunday morning church school kids in first - seventh grades. About every month, they participate in worship to share a song from their unit of learning.

I, Too" Choir
The "I, Too" Choir is named after our church slogan "I, Too, Minister Here". It consists of musicians of any age from sixth grade and above. They mostly provide more contemporary music during worship, and often lead the congregation in songs of praise during the Sunday morning service Preludes.

Organs
The church has two outstanding pipe organs. The sanctuary's superb Martin Ott pipe organ was completed in the year 2000 and is capable of playing all types of organ literature. It enhances worship by providing a sturdy support for congregational singing, quiet timbres for meditation, brilliant sounds for festive occasions, and colorful accompaniments for choirs and soloists. The arches and colors of the organ façade correlate with the rest of the sanctuary. The organ in Miller Chapel was built by Lynn Dobson of Lake City, Iowa in 1989. It is ideally suited to the size of the chapel. The church is fortunate to have excellent acoustics in both the sanctuary and Miller Chapel.

Radio Ministry
Radio Ministry - The Sunday 10:00 a.m. worship service is aired live on on the radio. The broadcast began in September, 1930, and has continued uninterrupted since then. The acoustic system, organ, choirs, sermons, responses and litany of the worship service is not diminished for many radio listeners, especially the hospitalized, homebound and ill who tune in as the next best thing to being there. Station and times are listed on our web site.

Worship services include singing, litanies, prayers, and scripture reading. Anthems by one of our many choirs or liturgical dance are also included. Our pastors' sermons have a reputation for being stimulating and challenging to the intellect and spirit.

The hymns for our worship services are copied (with permission) from hymnals of the congregational and reformed traditions and placed in our weekly worship bulletin. They are carefully selected to correlate to the scriptures for the service and include both traditional and recent hymns. Music sung by the choirs correlates to the scripture readings and encompasses a wide variety of styles and genres. Preludes for the organ are intended to prepare the congregation for worship; the Postlude is usually festive.

We hope you can join us!
