FUMC is a vibrant, growing church, dedicated to the spiritual growth of children, youth, and adults, as well as reaching out to others with local and global ministries.

The Music Ministry of the Church includes all of the musical groups and programs that help the congregation celebrate its faith through God's gift of talent.

Since this is a large congregation with wide ranging needs and experiences, the music heard in worship likewise meets these criteria. Whether one finds musical nurture in the great classical music and hymns, gospel songs, or 21st century music of the church, this variety is to be found in the Traditional Worship experience.

The Music Ministry of the church is a wide-ranging program. It includes a choir for each age group (4 years through senior adult), handbells, dinner theatre, youth musicals, a fully equiped Performing Arts Center, major works with orchestra, sold-out runs of a Broadway musical each summer, a "Meet the Composer" series, the Texas Street Arts Series, singing tours for the Youth and Adult choirs, and much more.

Youth Choir -

In addition to leading in the worship service during our early service (8:30 AM) on alternating Sunday mornings during the school year, our Chapel Choir (6th-12th grades) finds time to participate in Church Nights and an exciting variety of other activities and tours scheduled throughout the year.

 

The Chancel Choir (college age and up) is the primary musical organization for adults in the church. Providing musical leadership for the 11:00 AM service each Sunday. The choir sings all forms of sacred choral music from spirituals to the great classics of the church.

Handbells - Wesley Bells are for beginner to advanced ringers. No auditions are necessary to join the group. This group occasionally plays in Sunday worship services and other special programs of the church.

Our brass group performs on alternating Sundays during 11:00 worship services.

Throughout the church year the Chancel Choir presents major sacred choral works with orchestra. These have included Verdi's "Requiem," "Hodie" by Vaughn Willism, the American premier of Berlioz's "Messe Solennelle," Handel's "Messiah," Haydn's "The Creation," "The Passion According to St. Matthew," by J.S. Bach, Rutter's "Gloria," Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem," the The sacred Music of Duke Ellington, and many others.

First United Methodist Church Shreveport has maintained for over 100 years the tradition of a Pipe-Organ as the primary instrument that leads worship. In 1986, The Moller Organ Company was chosen to build a new 5-manual console, 48 new ranks of pipes, added to the present 39 ranks, bringing the total number to 87 ranks. In 1989, a 16-rank gallery (antiphonal) organ pipes were installed in the balcony and in 1990, a 5-octave set of English Hand bells (exposed) were added, both gallery organ and Hand bells are playable from from the 5-manual console.
