We’ve been on this corner since 1837. We’ve built, remodeled or added a building about every 50 years. Our last effort wrapped up in 1996. We have great stained glass windows representing over 150 years of artistic style, the original walnut pews, a “traditional” nave and sanctuary with a modified Wicks pipe organ and a sound system with recording capability and an infra-red loop for the hearing impaired.
We average 170 people at worship in two services, and are getting younger. We join together regularly to worship God, and to share our time, talent, and treasure in ways that help us serve God. Some of us find we connect better through the music or outreach than through the creeds. Some even appreciate the sermons!
We try to use real things in our worship: real bread, real wine, real candles, real music, real flowers. Even real people! Sunday worship is like a family reunion – the family gathers from wherever it was during the week. Once gathered, we celebrate the Holy Eucharist twice each Sunday, at 8:00 and again at 10:15 a.m. A time for coffee and conversation follows each service. The choir provides musical leadership at the later service on most Sundays of the normal academic year.
The Parish Choir serves as the backbone of the music at St. John’s. Our choir enhances the worship of our church through hymn leadership, choral anthems, and special programs. The parish choir provides the primary musical leadership for Sunday Holy Eucharist at 10:15 a.m. and other Holy Day services. Our repertoire draws from a broad range of musical periods and styles, including plainchant, 16th century anthems and motets, works of the great 18th and 19th century masters, as well as contemporary compositions. Throughout the year, the parish choir provides music for Evensong and other concerts, with a special offering taken to support a designated community service program.
