Our Identity & Mission Statement
Our church is a Christian covenant Community exclusively devoted to Jesus Christ and inclusively committed to God's unconditional grace. In joy and gratitude, we live out the call of Christ to worship God, make disciples, support one another, and share God's extravagant welcome.
Music plays a vital role in the worship life of First Congregational Church. The 8:30 Open Door Service includes piano selections and several hymns. The chapel has a small Möller pipe organ which is used occasionally. The main service in the sanctuary includes music by the Chancel Choir every Sunday, with occasional selections by the Bell Choir, the Cherub Choir, and Joyful Noise. The organ was completely rebuilt in 1997 by the Berghaus Organ Company and is a magnificent instrument of 50 ranks (sets of pipes) that allows the performance of a varied repertoire. We try to include music from diverse historical periods and styles. The Jane Hampton Chipman Lenten Organ Series has just finished its 25th year. This series of free noontime organ recitals is presented to the Elgin community each Friday during Lent and concludes with a choral concert on Good Friday.
If you cannot join us in person or perhaps you would like to re-listen to one of our sermons, visit the Sermon section of our web site for Real Audio and MP3 of our entire services, or sermon only.
