Saint Luke's Episcopal Church - Chicago, Illinois

Worship is a significant aspect of the “gathering” in St. Luke’s parish motto, “Gather and Go Forth.” The official canons of the Episcopal Church place the responsibility and authority for a congregation’s worship services squarely on the rector’s shoulders.

Music at St. Luke's exists to lead people in the worship of God, to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to provide for the musical training and Christian formation of children and adults, and to enrich the cultural life of the community. St. Luke's esteemed music program includes the congregation, the Choir of Men and Boys, the Girls Choir and Adult Schola, and the Saint Luke's Singers. The restored St. Luke's Organ, built by Ernest M. Skinner in 1922, is world renowned. In addition to providing music for worship, the choirs are known internationally for their recordings, and tours of Germany (2004) and Great Britain (2003).

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church hosts a monthly organ recital series throughout the year. Admission is free, with free-will offerings accepted.

On selected Sundays a Choral Evensong sung by the choirs of St. Luke’s will be followed by a guest recitalist presenting a program of 35 to 45 minutes which will begin at approximately 5pm.

The St. Luke's Choirs maintain a rigorous commitment and standard of excellence that are respected and emulated in the field of church music. St. Luke's Church is an affiliate of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), an organization dedicated to promoting high standards in church music.

The Choir of Men and Boys are heir to a glorious tradition dating back over 900 years. Choral singing by men and boys has been a tradition in the cathedrals and collegiate chapels of England for centuries. Composers from William Byrd to Benjamin Britten have been inspired by this unique sound. Some of the finest treasures of sacred music are intended for choirs of men and boys.

The Girls Choir and Schola was refounded in 1986 to provide a parallel experience for girls. With an average age higher than that of the Boys Choir, the Girls Choir engages in a similar rigorous weekly routine. The Schola is a group of adult altos, tenors, and basses, who combine with the girls to perform four- to eight-part literature. Together this choir sings with the Choir of Men and Boys at the 10:00 AM Holy Eucharist September - May. The Girls Choir and Schola are featured on the compact disc, Lessons and Carols for Christmastide.

The Saint Luke's Singers is a choir of women's and men's voices (SATB) that functions at various liturgical and musical events throughout the year. The Singers are responsible for the music at the principal Eucharist in the summer. Along with the other parish choirs, they are featured in the 1993 compact disc, A Fair and Delectable Place and in the 1994 release, Blow Ye the Trumpet in Zion.

Our Organ

The world-renowned St. Luke's organ was
built in 1921-22 by the Ernest M. Skinner
Organ Company of Boston, the most
significant American organ builder of the
first half of the twentieth century. A complete restoration of the organ by the Thompson-Allen Organ Company of New Haven, Connecticut
took place 1994-98. Through recent and
soon-to-be-released recordings, the reputation
of the St. Luke's organ continues to grow,
and many of the world's leading organists now make pilgrimages to Lucille to hear, play and record this magnificent instrument.
