First United Church is an inclusive community of Christian faith. We are a unified congregation proudly affiliated with two denominations – American Baptist Churches USA and United Church of Christ – but our congregation includes persons from many different religious backgrounds.
Worship is a time for celebration and contemplation as a community of Christian faith. Through song and prayer, through silence and the spoken word, through sharing Communion at the table of Christ, we remember that we are children of God, following the way of Jesus.
The music program of the First United Church has long been noted for its excellence. We draw upon both the professional talents of the IU School of Music and the enthusiastic participation of amateur music lovers in our congregation.
The Adult Choir ministers through music at Sunday morning worship as well as special services and performances throughout the year.
They are a mixed-voice ensemble of around 30 singers ranging in experience from beginners to seasoned professionals. Recent repertoire includes works from Vaughn Williams, Lauridson, Brahms, Bach, Pinkham, Britten, and our organist, Edwin Penhorwood. The choir is also well-acquainted with many folk and world traditions, including shape-note harmony, spirituals, Gospel, and Taise.
