The Church of the Redeemer - Sarasota, Florida

All are invited to join us in our mission to build up the Body of Christ by Word and Sacrament, equipping the people of God for the work of ministry, that Jesus Christ may be known, loved, worshipped, and obeyed in our homes and parish, community and diocese, and throughout the world.

Through the Holy Eucharist, our principal act of worship, we participate in Christ's sacrifice as well as experience and celebrate his presence. It is this Jesus Christ whom we worship and obey who is the salvation of the world and whom we strive to make known throughout our community and to the ends of the earth.

Worship is at the very heart of all that we are and do as members of the Body of Christ.

OUR WORSHIP
Holy Eucharist, Rite I (said)

A traditional Mass without music, for our early risers! Worship concludes around 8:15. Coffee and pastries are served in Gillespie Hall afterwards. Nursery care is not available during this service.

Holy Eucharist, Rite II (choral)
This is our family service (which simply means that it's where you'll find most of the children!), featuring the best in Anglican liturgy and music. After the reading of the Gospel, children -- Kindergarten through Grade 5 -- process to "Children's Chapel" for a children's sermon and liturgy. (They return during the anthem.)

Holy Eucharist, Rite I (choral)
A traditional service -- similar to the 7:30, but with music. It concludes shortly after noon, and refreshments follow in Gillespie Hall. During certain parts of the year, this service begins with Morning Prayer on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Holy Eucharist, Rite II (Contemporary)
Every Saturday, the Church of the Redeemer offers a unique worship service that combines our traditional Holy Eucharist (Rite II) with contemporary praise music. Usually once a month, a potluck supper follows this Saturday night service and is held in the adjoining Gillespie Hall.

Solemn Evensong
This beautiful service is a time-honored Anglican tradition originating in the 16th century, and is enjoyed by many music lovers regardless of their religious affiliation. Evensong closes the Lord’s Day with the choir and congregation singing much of the liturgy and organ accompaniment and improvisation. The wealth of literature composed for Evensong is brought to life when offered in this sacred space.
Evensong is performed monthly from September through May by the choirs of the Church of the Redeemer. Typically, Evensong occurs at 5:15 pm on the third Sunday of these months. Several times a year, a wine and light hors d’oeuvres reception follows this service.

Music at Redeemer
The Music program at the Church of the Redeemer is one of its great strengths and is central to our rich liturgical life. Every Sunday, our choirs perform anthems expressive of the great diversity found in Christian choral literature. Monthly, September through May, the time-honored Anglican tradition of Evensong is performed. During Advent and Lent, midday organ recitals are offered.

Throughout the year, music fills our church and campus with the sounds of rehearsals, concerts, and community recitals from some of the best and most talented instrumentalists, vocalists, ensembles, and orchestras -- not only in Sarasota, but throughout the world.
The public is warmly invited to visit the Church of the Redeemer and enjoy our music offerings throughout the year.

The Bell Tower at the Church of the Redeemer
Towering sixty-five feet above the ground and standing as a permanent offering of glory to Almighty God is the great Bell Tower at the Church of the Redeemer. Housed within it are five bronze bells, dedicated 8 October 1967 which, day by day, week by week, call the people of Sarasota to the worship of God.

Made possible by a generous donation by Mrs. Irene Almeda Hope, the tower and its bells are in memory of her husband, Frank Radford Hope. The bells are German, cast at the Rudolph Perner foundry in Passau, a city famous for its bells since the 12th century.

Each of the bells is named and carries its own inscription. The powerful bass bell, depicting the Risen Christ and inscribed with the words, ''I am the resurrection and the life," is a D bell which weighs 3,335 pounds. Called by experts, "a magnificent octave third bell with internal harmony comparable to an organ," the bell has an immense resonance which holds sound for three minutes and can be heard for several miles. It is tolled alone at funerals.

The St. Joseph Bell is an F-sharp bell weighing 1,595 pounds and is inscribed with the words, "O ye humble and holy men of heart, bless ye the Lord." It is rung at the beginning of services.

The St. Francis Bell, weighing 883 pounds, is rung at the end of a service and bears the words, "They are not of the world, even so have I sent them into the world."

The St. Mary Bell is sounded at weddings at the church as the bride and groom process out. It is a 620-pound B bell containing the words, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord."

The Gabriel Bell is rung at the beginning and the end of the Canon of Consecration. It is a 2,174-pound E bell which bears the words, "Praise ye him all ye angels."

An electrical mechanism sets the bells in motion in the tower, insuring a superior tone to the sounds when motionless bells are struck.
