Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green - New Castle, Delaware

At Immanuel, we celebrate the love of God made manifest in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as members of the Christian family and the Anglican Communion. Our community of 250 people worships in the same place where New Castle Anglicans have prayed for over 300 years.

There’s always something going on at Immanuel, for we come together to worship, to learn, to celebrate, and to minister – and often times to eat and make merry as well.

Immanuel is known for making its music and hymn singing an integral aspect of the liturgy and celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Visit during a choral service and you’re likely to hear magnificent organ playing and choral singing.

Another way that music is incorporated into the liturgy is through our choral Evensong services, held the second Sunday of each month from September through April.

Immanuel is one of the few churches in Delaware to offer regular choral Evensong services. The goal of these services is twofold:

• To offer a choral service in the ancient Anglican tradition
• To expand our worship offerings

Anyone who is familiar with Immanuel knows our long tradition of excellence in choral music, led by the Choir of Women and Men.

Choral services at Immanuel use a great deal of diverse music, so both the congregation and the choir tend to do a lot of singing. The choir’s primary job is to lead the congregation in the singing of hymns, psalms, and the parts of the liturgy that are sung rather than spoken.

A Special Place Musically

What else makes Immanuel’s music stand out? Our parish has a long-standing tradition of Anglican-chant psalm singing with both the choir and the congregation – this is very rare in the United States.

• Our repertoire is uncommon. We sing a wide range of both hymns and anthems. (Hymns are the songs that come out of the Episcopal Church Hymnal and which are usually sung by both the choir and congregation; anthems don’t come out of the hymnal and are sung by the choir alone at specific points during the sermon.)

• We sing parts of the liturgy in both of the Book of Common Prayer formats, Rite 1 and Rite 2.

Another thing that makes Immanuel unusual is that the congregation is very musical – we know the music, sing the psalms and the liturgy, and will often sing parts on the hymns. The choir is mindful of this fact and the relationship between the choir and congregation is often seamless during a service. The congregation looks to the choir to lead them, and appreciates when the choir sings along. But we also worship together musically.

Named after George Ross, the first rector at Immanuel, the children’s choir is yet another way to teach our children both the importance of ministry and of living in community.
The choir has an affiliation with the Royal School of Church Music in England, and sings at several services during the year, including at least one Evensong service. But the most important aspect of the Ross choir is its educational and spiritual component.

The tower bells of Immanuel echo out across the expanse of the Delaware river, two blocks south of the church, and whether they’re calling parishioners to service or acknowledging a marriage or a death, their peals have been a welcome sound in New Castle for years. Immanuel’s bells are distinctive; they are one of only 28 sets of change-ringing bells throughout the United States and Canada.
