Saint Paul's on the Green - Norwalk, Connecticut

Music is integral to the worship and community life of St. Paul’s on the Green. Music is not worshipped here, but it empowers the worship experience. While no one can define how music transforms our communal worship life, no one can deny that it happens. Whether it is the quietest chant, or most triumphant anthem, music can do what ordinary words remain powerless to do: it reaches deep into our soul and moves us.

There are currently over 70 people (ages 7 to 80) singing in the choirs of St. Paul’s. The St. Paul’s Choir and Choristers sing for the Solemn Eucharist each Sunday, and each of these choirs sings monthly Choral Evensong. The choir’s repertoire spans over 500 years, including masterpieces of Renaissance polyphony, Classical and Romantic repertoire, and music through the 21st century. The choir sings a choral setting of the mass ordinary on special or festival occasions during the choir season.

The Compline Choir (men’s choir and women’s choir) sings chant and polyphony every Sunday night for the 9 PM service of Compline.

Choral Evensong is sung daily throughout the Anglican Communion in cathedrals, collegiate chapels, monastic communities and parish churches. This music-filled service is offered twice monthly as part of the Sacred Music at St. Paul's Series at St. Paul's on the Green. Some of the services are sung by the St. Paul's Evensong Choir and some by the St. Paul's Choristers. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is included at several of the Evensong services.

Compline is sung every Sunday evening at 9 PM and lasts twenty minutes. In addition to Gregorian chant, at least one polyphonic motet is sung each week. Each Sunday following Compline, the St. Paul's Bookstore and Café will be open offering warm drinks in the winter and cool drinks in the summer.

While we have worked hard to develop our choral program here at St. Paul’s, we believe deeply in the power of congregational singing and our choir’s primary responsibility is to lead and inspire congregational song. We use the Hymnal 1982 as our primary musical resource, but on occasion draw from other sources as well.

Our 1928 E.M. Skinner organ was installed and enlarged in 1992, and has just been newly rebuilt by The Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence, Kansas.

St. Paul's is pleased to offer two mid-week, lunchtime organ recital series:

Organ in October and OrganPLUS in Lent. Each series of recitals features St. Paul's 1928 E.M. Skinner Organ which was enlarged in 1992 by John Randolph of Brooklyn. and newly rebuilt (2006/07) by The Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence, Kansas. The organ contains more than 3000 individual pipes!
