The story of Saint Joseph Church began in 1777 when Mission Santa Clara was founded and the adjacent Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe became the first civil settlement in Alta California. A small adobe church was established in the village and dedicated to Saint Joseph in 1803, making it the first parish in the state of California.

Music at St. Joseph Cathedral

The St. Joseph Cathedral Choir has provided music ministry for the 11:30 Sunday liturgy since 1992. The choir performs a variety of musical styles from Latin chant to contemporary choral works. The Cathedral Choir provides music for many diocesan events throughout the year. 2003, the Bi-centennial year full of festivities at St. Joseph Cathedral, the choir will participate in major musical events in the spring and fall.

The Cathedral Schola is a quartet of musicians that sings only early music in various languages. This group provides music for liturgies and events that call for an old world sound.

The Spanish Choir is an all-volunteer choir that provide very energetic and culturally meaningful music. The blend of voices makes a beautiful sound for the assembly that fosters participation by all attending.
