Saint Gregory’s Episcopal Church - San Francisco, California

At Saint Gregory's, we make the liturgy together, reclaiming the vitality of early Christianity and creating new forms.

Liturgy
Our liturgies are spiritual experiences: we encourage people to
sing, dance, and eat together; to share silences and prayer; to
hear Scripture, the teaching of preachers and the witness of
congregants. Our worship is fully participatory, and we
welcome all people –especially strangers—to communion.

Sunday Worship Services
8:30 Holy Eucharist: A contemplative service with the congregation chanting Psalms and sharing silences and reflection.

10:30 Holy Eucharist: A vibrant, colorful service with a Gospel procession, chanted Eucharistic prayer, dancing, and extensive congregational singing supported by a choir.

There’s a lot of singing at Saint Gregory’s! As there is no organ, the choir serves as the backbone to support the people in a capella singing. The congregation sings, in four-part harmony, during most of the service-- opening prayers, hymns and canticles between Scripture readings, the Lord’s Prayer, music when we walk up to the altar, music during communion, and music with the dance. Visitors tell us that they’re struck by how easy it is for first-timers to participate, and how wonderful it is to be part of making such high-quality, beautiful music.

Choir
The all-volunteer choir is a central part of Saint Gregory’s. We supply the complete score for all the music used in our services and encourage everyone to participate. The choir provides strong vocal leadership and leads harmony parts.

Choir members don’t wear vestments, but they open the service by gathering together and singing an anthem, then sit dispersed among the congregation during the first part of the service, singing strongly and helping carry the music. As the congregation gathers around the altar, choir members reassemble as a group to sing anthems during communion and collection; then they disperse among the congregation again for the final danced carol, sung by everyone.

Musical Style
Variety of musical styles is a hallmark of Saint Gregory’s. We intentionally present pieces from an range of eras and styles in every service. We sing English Renaissance music, Anglican chant, Russian Orthodox music, American Spirituals, and much more. Early American “shape-note” pieces figure prominently along with South African freedom songs, as well as 20th century English and American a cappella anthems. Most importantly, we have a tradition of fostering original compositions from members of our community. Currently we have seven active composers producing new works for congregational singing as well as choir anthems. Seventeen original anthems are collected on the choir’s CD, The Harmony of That Motion, and some of our congregational pieces can be heard on the companion CD to our songbook, Music for Liturgy.

Join us each week through free podcast featuring the weekly sermon. Visit our web site for more information on audio of our sermons, how to purchase our choir's music CDs and our upcoming musical events.
