San Carlos Borromeo de Monterey was founded by Father Junipero Serra on June 3, 1770, on the shores of Monterey Bay, as the cornerstone of his Mission. A year later, Fr. Serra moved the Mission to Carmel. The church remained as a Royal Chapel for the soldiers guarding the new Spanish Presidio of Monterey. The present sandstone church was completed in 1794.
We hope you will find the Cathedral a place of interest, warmth, inspiration, and solace.
MUSIC MINISTRY
San Carlos follows the guidelines of "Music in Catholic Worship" and "Liturgical Music Today," publications of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on worship. Therefore, our mission is to foster full, conscious and active participation of the assembly in celebrating Mass. Our ministry includes, but is not limited to, cantors, accompanists, choirs, and instrumentalists.
