First Baptist Church - Los Angeles, California

On Sept. 6, 1874, eleven followers of Jesus gathered for worship at the first service of the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles under the leadership of the church’s first pastor, Dr. William Hobbs. And it was only a year later that FBC led Baptist churches in officially organizing a Sunday School with its own separate constitution and by-laws.

The 1980s brought to FBC a designation by the City of Los Angeles as Historic Cultural Monument No. 237 in 1981, and FBC hosted the Baptist World Alliance in 1986 where former president Jimmy Carter spoke.

With a membership rich in diversities and backgrounds, FBC will continue to be a light to Los Angeles and to other parts of the world from its house of worship at 760 South Westmoreland Avenue.

Our Music
The main thrust of the music program at the First Baptist Church is to provide music for the Sunday morning worship services.

Our Cathedral Choir sings at every Sunday morning worship service at 11:00 a.m.

As part of the Church School program, the children are led in song by a teacher of the Church School. The Children's Choir sings during the 11:00 a.m. worship service approximately every other month.

Our Sanctuary Organ was built in 1926 by W. W. Kimball of Chicago, Illinois, and rebuilt in 1964 by Ken Simpson of Los Angeles. It was one of the largest pipe organs that Kimball ever built and at the time was the largest pipe organ in Los Angeles, and remained so until 1969. The 90-rank instrument has over 5,000 pipes, housed in five separate chambers, plus a balcony echo organ. The pipes range in size from one inch to 32-feet in length.

Our Organist plays every Sunday for Worship at 11:00 a.m. In addition to Sunday morning worship services, the organ may be heard during organ recitals scheduled periodically. Many of the finest organists in the world have performed on our organ, including Virgil Fox, Robert Plimpton, Pierre Cochereau, John Weaver, Audrey Jacobsen, Irene Robertson and Frederick Swann. It remains in demand as a concert instrument.

Our Sunday Worship Times
The worship service is at 11:00 am every Sunday. There are Korean and Spanish audio headsets available for translations.

Audio of our services is available on our web site.
