Review - Shine - The Hits (Newsboys)

The Newsboys' greatest hits CD is definitely the best one to be released lately. To start off with, the collection of songs it boasts is wonderful. Focusing on the Newsboys' four newest CD's (excluding Love Liberty Disco, and including one song from an even earlier CD), the best songs from those discs were included here. The decision to exclude Love Liberty was a good one, for it makes it possible to expose newer Newsboys fans to all the hit songs from the earlier releases. This makes for many 'new' songs if you didn't know the Newsboys before their Step Up CD. It may even encourage you to get their older CD's.

Four new songs were recorded for this CD, all of which have an excellent pop/rock/disco Newsboys vibe, and offer an incentive to get this CD for fans who already have the older CD's. The best new song is 'Joy': 'If life is water, I was dry as tucson dirt / If it's a gamble, I'd already lost my shirt ... You give me joy that's unspeakable / And I like it, and I like it yeah yeah / Your love for me is irresistible / I can't fight it, I can't fight it yeah yeah / You carried the cross and took my shame / I believe it, I believe it yeah yeah / You shine Your light of amazing grace / I receive it, I receive it yeah yeah'. 'Praises' is also an incredible new song, a pop/dance song about worshipping God. The new version of 'God Is Not A Secret' featuring Toby Mac is severely rocked-up, offering a glimpse at what Toby's upcoming solo CD may be like. 'Mega-Mix' remixes all the best Newsboys hits.

Of the hit songs that came before Step Up, you'll probably recognize 'Shine' and 'I'm Not Ashamed' since they were remixed on the Entertaining Angels Maxi Single. 'Breakfast', 'Reality', 'Take Me To Your Leader' and 'Spirit Thing' are the earlier top pop hits that will appeal to Newsboys fans, and 'Where You Belong / Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus' is a suprisingly gentle worship song. The lyric booklet has great photos of the Newsboys and lyrics for the new songs. It's too bad that the lyric booklet wasn't extended with more photos and lyrics for all the songs. The best bonus came to fans who rushed to get the CD right away: they got a very limited edition free copy of Live One Night in Pennsylvania on DVD, which was available from release day of 10/24 until 11/21, or until supplies lasted.
