About Michelle Bonilla

You may do a double-take at your first spin of Michelle Bonilla’s debut “Phenomenal,” thinking you’re witnessing the return of the sorely-missed Stacie Orrico. But Bonilla just may help you forget the hole left behind by Orrico.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, and the product of Dominican and Puerto Rican parentage, Michelle was exposed to cultural and artistic diversity at an early age. Her youth was rich with Latin, Caribbean, Gospel, hip-hop and R&B flavor. Her father, a Latin jazz guitarist, played a significant role in Michelle’s life.

Michelle released her debut CD, “Phenomenal,” in 2006.  Singing in both English and Spanish she shows great control over her vocals, zigging and zagging at all the appropriate moments.  Whether the tune is urban, Latin, contemporary Gospel, pop or jazz, she knows what she’s doing.

The CD starts mildly with “All to You,” then deeply devotional “Sinti (Without You)” and pop-inflected contemporary gospel ("Don't Stop") to acoustic pop ("Oh Lord You Are") and acoustic soul ("Cold World").  She stretches out her voice on “Your Love,” and on “Phenomenal Interlude,” she tells exactly who the Lord is in her own life.  The autobiographical “Little Girl” showcases her warm vocals over salsa-flavored rhythms and guitars, showing her vocal strength is there when needed.

Michelle has performed in the company of established artists such as Anointed, Crystal Lewis, Nicole Mullen, Out Of Eden, and Papa San. She has also been featured on Cross Movement’s Grammy and Dove nominated album “Higher Definition”.

The Christian music scene greatly needs talent of this kind, and of this genre.
