REVIEW
OF LOST PERSONS AREA CD
It never
ceases to amaze me as a CD reviewer the sea of creativity which exists in Christian
music artists who depend on the Holy Spirit to inspire them, to create music using
their gifts for the glory of the Lord, and for the blessing of the listener!
GLASS
DARKLY has been from the beginning one of those talented groups of Christians
not afraid to boldly proclaim the Gospel; Living, composing, and performing to
please the Lord, to the very best of their ability. Bringing joy to the Lord through
their music comes first, before any ambitions they have for the GLASS DARKLY band.
So, it is not surprising that
one finds on their very special collection of songs found on their debut album,
LOST PERSONS AREA, that their passion of their belief in Jesus freely flows through
their well -performed compositions, lyrics, and vocals. Their faith and dedication
to the Lord flows through their music, which is a powerful vehicle for the Gospel
of Jesus, reaching out to believers and seekers as well. They prove that the alternative
rock genre and strong spiritual messages do belong together!
This
CD is a stunning example of what happens when musical creativity and talent combine
with a passionate, spiritual love of the Lord, in music and lyrical message, composed
and performed in an alternative rock format. For the result is the creation of
an irresistible musical package which offers high quality compositions and vocals
paired with meaningful lyrical messages, which encourage and feed the listener,
while being musically entertaining and spiritually moving at the same time. Whether
with an energetic zing and drive or with a poignant beauty, the spiritual quality
and passion of their music fully expresses itself verbally and musically in a
most professional manner, sweeping the listener away both musically and spiritually!
The songs found on LOST
PERSONS AREA can be described as covering a variety of spiritual moods, composed
and performed in various combinations of musical formats which can be found in
alternative rock genre music. Musical spice and sparkle is added throughout the
compositions with an interesting mix of blues, gospel, soul, syncopated, and dotted
note rhythms, which is all brought to life by well-done, inspired electric and
acoustic guitar work, drums, a guest harmonica player and interesting, passionate,
dynamic vocals, courtesy of David Painter, a gifted artist, composer and vocalist,
who expresses the lyrical messages so well, no matter the style of the song presented.
David
Painter is GLASS DARKLY's main vocalist who has quite
a vocal range, great breath control, understands what vocal style and dynamics
is required for each song and easily adapts his vocals to the right style and
nuance, (edgy/gritty to mellow) and is always on key with great diction and clarity. Sometimes a reviewer may get tired of an artist's voice by the end of the CD being
reviewed, but not the vocals performed by David Painter.
On LOST PERSONS AREA's collection of songs, one
hears edgy, sometimes gritty, alternative Gospel rock and worship music, along
with poignant to energetic ballads, all with great melodies & meaningful lyrics,
each with an musically interesting introduction. These compositions, which showcase
the GLASS DARKLY unique sound, cover praise and worship anthems, prayer hymns
and worship ballads, which have been used in contemporary group worship experiences,
and are most enjoyable for the listener as well, sure to get your day off on the
right foot, with the right attitude.
It
is inspiring to hear creative alternative rock with so many elements used in a
variety of compositions perfectly for each song, each different in mood, the perfect
vehicle for each song's intended message. Their unique forms of well-done alternative
rock adds a dynamic to prayer anthems, ballads, and praise and worship music which
is fresh, inspiring and a powerful musical voice.
Their
driving, powerful, blues influenced, spirited rock anthem signature song, MORE
THAN A SONG clearly broadcasts the band's spiritual focus, which is to please
the Lord expressing their love of Jesus using the best part of themselves, through
their talents and gifts, reaching out to believers and seekers as well, with a
fire and an energy found in the song's composition and vocals which is infectious,
pumping up the spirit and passion for worship.
Another
high-flyn', driving rock praise and worship anthem is JESUS JESUS, which gets
the joint jumpin' right away being the first cut on the album. A wonderful mix
of Led Zeplin, rock, and Gospel, propelled along with driving syncopation and
doted notes, great guitar rifts, and a very busy bass part, which they play effortlessly
with enthusiasm, paired with wonderful vocals fully expressing praise and worship
of Jesus.
YOU
FIRST - An interesting, dynamic composition, with
a great musical introduction (See below in song evaluation section for more details).
Song begins as a rock confessional hymn, builds into a worship song and is a full
blown love letter to Jesus in the rousing chorus!
LIGHT
OF DAY - A rousing combination of pure, energetic, spirited acoustic rock ensemble
and blues, courtesy of a bluesy harmonica which all cooks along in a tight ensemble,
matching the fervent spirit and joy of the vocals, making this song a rather energizing
worship and praise anthem for any contemporary service, or for your personal listening
experience, sure to stomp out any dour mood, and probably will get the listener
dancing around the room as well!!
SHAKE
ME - Another stirring worship anthem in which blues and rock combine again in
a dynamic composition which explores the human tendency to be complacent about
our faith, pointing to whom we need to seek for strength and support - the Lord.
KING
OF THE WORLD - An interesting mix of rock & prayer ballad. Song begins as
a soulful prayer hymn seeking reconnection with the Lord, which segues into a
joyous rock segment in the Vamp.
I
NEED TO SEE YOU - A musically interesting, spiritually
inspiring alternative rock prayer hymn with a touch of blues written in a minor
key with a light rock beat, and an very different melody carried by edgy-style
vocals makes this prayer hymn a unique listening experience, aimed at providing
a spirit of worship and prayer in an alternative rock genre..
This
collection offers as well a group of excellent, well written and dynamically performed
contemporary prayer and worship ballads, which would fit into any contemporary
worship service, or for a personal time of worship and spiritual renewal, focusing
not on self but on the Lord.
PERFECT
LOVE * KING OF ALL KINGS * I CAN HEAR * KEEPER OF ME * YOURS - All inspire the
listener to sing along with heartfelt worship and praise, as the band's passionately
held vision to to reflect something of the wonder and power of God and to inspire
people to go deeper into relationship with him is expressed, both lyrically and
musically. Dynamic compositions, with heart-felt lyrics, effective yet easy to
remember choruses, irresistible melodies, inspiring vocals create songs empowered
with spiritual umph, which truly do inspire worship and praise.
PERFECT
LOVE - Wonderful light rock worship anthem, with a memorable melody, smooth vocal
style, easy to remember but meaningful chorus, which is very popular among British
congregations and would do very well in the United States, both on the charts
and in services.
KING OF ALL
KINGS - A congregation tested, uplifting worship anthem which would appeal to
just about any congregation who enjoys contemporary or even traditional anthems.
I
CAN HEAR -Lovely acoustic worship hymn with a peppy spirit, heartfelt vocals,
offering the usually great dynamics, memorable melody, meaningful lyrics, and a
glorious refrain, perfect for any contemporary service or a personal worship time.
KEEPER OF ME - A spiritually
moving, light rock, dynamic worship song, with a memorable melody paired with
terrific lyrics, expressing gratitude and encourages thankfulness and worship
in a most delightful way.
YOURS - An upbeat, acoustic worship hymn ends the CD on a confessional,
repentant note and a declaration of belief, worship of Jesus, which dedicates
one to be a living sacrifice each day for the Lord.
SPIRITUAL
TRUTHS / THEMES found in Songs
GLASS DARKLY
offers the best in alternative rock with the best in lyrical expression, which
explore struggles of the seeker, struggles of the believer, and how wonderful our
Lord Jesus is, offering a variety of praise and worship anthems, prayer hymns,
and ballads sure to stir the soul and feed the spirit within!
"Searching
is a prevalent one, but the main feel is one of people on the fringes of church
(or society as a whole) who struggle to live the Christian life the way they want
to, but are determined to change. This reflects a general autobiographical approach
to the songwriting."

More
About Their Music
Martyn Casserly shares
with ChristianMusic.com about their creative
process in writing / composing songs: "Dave
usually writes the lyrics and some chords. He brings them to rehearsal and we
listen and then play around with the music to try and make something out of it.
During the recording of our album we had, for probably the first time, a real
opportunity to write the best parts for the songs that we could."
Martyn continues, "I found the process very liberating, because it can be
hard to write something complicated when the other guys in the band want to press
on and not spend the best part of an hour listening to me come up with a great
solo. It just isn’t practical, so the recording process allows us that freedom,
which is great."
Martyn reflects upon
his favorite musical segments found in the compositions of these songs.
"There
are a few parts I am quite proud of on the album. The end solo section on "King
of the World" was done in one take, which I was very pleased with. I had spent
the previous day fasting for that solo and thanked God all the way home after
listening back to it."
"The intro
to "Perfect Love" and the end section where all new and written late on in the
recording process, as was the final uplifting riff in "I can hear". I think if
we had recorded the album in a professional studio (with all the costs that entails)
we wouldn’t have come with something as good as we have now. Time was the most
precious thing that doing it all ourselves gave us, and we hope that we have used
it wisely!"

+ JESUS, JESUS - Music and Lyrics by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
2nd
favorite praise and worship rock anthem of this reviewer. CD begins with a bang
of energy and passionate faith with this energetic, enthusiastic, joyous Psalm-like,
praise, and worship rock anthem, A love letter to Jesus which really cooks musically
in both the composition and the vocals. Fast two meter feel, along with a liberal
dose of syncopated rock and dotted note rhythms keeps this song roaring along!
Great alternative rock in the spirit of Led Zepplin, with soul and blues influences
added for a unique presentation.
Has great
dynamics interwoven in this solidly layered musical composition, which features
a catchy infectious melody, carried by the strong vocals, and supported by an
underlying driving 2 quarter note/ dotted eighth note rhythm played tightly and
sharply, which varies nicely during verses, which adds to the spirit of the song.
Drums and guitars play like a tight unit, adding a lot of umph! During verses:
While the bass guitar continues with the main rhythm, electric guitar plays tight
staccato syncopation, adding a quiet zing. Inspiring guitar riffs offer color
and variety, in various parts of the song:
Fine
vocals by David Painter are sung soulfully with a heartfelt fire for the Lord,
whether soft or full volume. Touch of blues /soul mingle with rock style can be
heard in his singing style, making his alternative rock vocals the perfect vehicle
and feel for this dynamic presentation of the lyrical declaration of faith and
praise.
David Painter's Comment: "Statement
of faith. I wanted to write something that really rocked - Led Zepplin style.
We put this as the first song on the album because we wanted to nail our colors
to the mast and show people what we're about."

* * * + + SHAKE ME - Words and Music
by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Another
strong favorite of this reviewer. Inspiring mix of blues and rock with soulful
vocals to match. Dynamic composition and vocals cook along very nicely together
with a soulful vigor, pep, and energy offering the perfect musical vehicle for
the song's message. Verses are sung in a blues/rock style, while the chorus is
straight rock, which propels a very contagious urge to worship with vigor. Bass
is busy playing a counter melody while lead guitar has some fun adding some blues
sparkle to verses.
Inspiring guitar blues /
rock riffs also are most entertaining, especially the one between the 3rd verse
and last time through the chorus.
David Painter
Comments: "This was born out of a realization of complacency. When you think
you've made it, you really haven't. We've got to keep growing and changing into
the person God wants us to be. Psalm 61:2 - 'lead me to the rock that's higher
than I' is about dependency and humility. These are two themes that I tried
to explore a little here."

Lyrics:
I've
been still but I have felt no peace / I heard the rocks cry when my praises ceased
/ A mountain fell once when I called Your name / I've lost my voice but I will
sing again.
Chorus:Shake me / You know it's
kinda strange / But I'm believing that a man can change / So lead me to the rock / that's higher than I / Break me / Gotta stop the rot
/ 'Cause there's no telling / How much time we've got / So lead me on, lead me
on, lead me on / Lead me to the rock / that's higher than I / Higher than I.
I'd
run a thousand miles for just one kiss / I've never known anything quite like
this / I've shed a million tears to save my soul / I've got my eyes fixed on my
only goal.
Chorus:
Some
people are sentimental / They don't care to change their ways / Some folk aren't
so careful / They wanna run but they close their eyes / Maybe I could be like
a brother to that lonely man? / Maybe I could be like that good Samaritan?

* * + + YOU FIRST - Words and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band
Strong
favorite of this reviewer. Joyful praise rock anthem, an energetic love letter
to Jesus. The introduction is my favorite! Begins with an ensemble of guitars;
lead & regular guitar hold chordal notes for the first 4-6 measures, while
the bass plays a dotted note intro in a minor key which segues into a joyous electric
guitar dotted note jig, played up a few amps in energy, moving into the first
verse of the song. A lively composition which makes great use of musical talent
and insights of the musicians and the lead vocalist, David, who celebrate through
music the gift of Jesus Christ in their lives.
David
Painter Comments: 1 John 4:19, "We have loved
because He first loved us." This song was inspired by the theological truth
that God chose us.
Scriptural References: (1 John 4:19, Micah 6:8, Ephes. 4:28, Ezek. 26:26, Romans 12:2)
Lyrics: "Can You See It Any Clearer?"
When
you first called me I had my face in the dirt / When you first healed me / You
took my pride and it hurt.
You changed my mind
and you captured my heart. You had to humble me before you could start.
Then
I met Jesus / All the shame has gone / Even in the darkest valley I can clearly
see the Son / Now I met Jesus / I've been lifted high / I've been shown the way
to heaven and the doors have opened wide.
I
love you, yeah, I love you / And I'll be dancing till I can't dance no more /
I love you, yeah I love you / And I'll be singing till I hear your voice.
When
you first loved me I bore the scars of the scars of a wounded man / When you first
saw me / You saw the brokenness in who I am.
In
all your greatness / You've taken the pain / I stand complete in you / I'm walking
again.//
* * * + + KEEPER OF ME - Words and
Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Second
favorite prayer and worship hymn of this reviewer. Beautiful, spiritually moving
acoustic-based worship prayer hymn with a light rock beat, sung with feeling and
great dynamics. Electric guitars begin by playing the broken chord acoustic part,
which builds in sound and intensity throughout the song. Smooth Vocals poignantly
express the meaningful lyrics, starting softly but building to the chorus. After
the first chorus, Backup harmonies add a nice dimension, to the growing sound
of the composition. The song inspires worship from its beginning. Listener can't
help but sing along in worship, as the music washes over one's being.
David
Painter Comments: "This is essentially about
the security of being a child of God. We were invited to perform at a local secular
carnival once and my outstanding memory of the event was when we played "Keeper
of Me". We came to the bridge part: "Here I will stay, stay, stay, stay; washed
in Your blood that never fails,' and suddenly everybody in the place seemed to
stop what they were doing. It felt like 500 pairs of eyes were just staring at
us and there we were proclaiming this amazing truth. I remember getting this incredible
buzz that was like 'Yeah, this is what I want to do with my life.'"

You
are the keeper of my heart. You are the keeper of me. You draw me nearer to the
cross / Here I find mercy 2x.
Bridge 1: Search

Chorus 1: For
you're the one who lifts me out of the water / when the tide takes me away / And
Your blood cleanses me deeper / than a thousand sorrys I say.
You
are the keeper of my heart. You are the keeper of me. You draw me nearer to the
cross / Here I find mercy 2x.
Bridge 2: Here
I find mercy, find mercy Search me oh God / And know
my ways.
Chorus 2: For you're the one who
lifts me out of the water / when the tide takes me away / Your blood cleanses
me deeper / than a thousand sorrys I say/ You lift

me closer into your presence where I will.
Stay,

* * * + + KING OF ALL KINGS - Words
and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Second
favorite praise and worship song of this reviewer. It's upbeat tempo, memorable
melody, heartfelt vocals and the spirit flowing throughout this song will have
the listener singing along with enthusiasm by the time the chorus comes around.
Mood changing segues and dynamic buildups and decrescendos make it a very effective
praise and worship song. It is no wonder this song inspires praise and worship.
Peppy electric and acoustic guitar parts strongly
support the melody and along with the light drums keep the energy of the song
propelling along. Vocals and band begins softly and light in sound, but grows
in intensity and volume. VAMP begins quietly, in a mood of worship, but builds
in sound and intensity. By the middle of the VAMP section song is really cooking
into a full blown praise and worship song. Great guitar interlude between VAMP
and TAG.
Lead vocals are effectively dynamic
and change in demeanor as the song progresses..Again, very nicely done backup
harmonies add support and umph to the song.
David
Painter's Intro: "KOAK started out as a simple worship song and we had a
lot of success with it in various churches and Christian events around the country.
The 'Let Your Kingdom come section towards the end is my favorite part and this
was spontaneously introduced one Sunday morning while Martyn was leading worship
at our home church. He started singing the line from the Lord's prayer and the
church went with him. And we had a great time worshipping and crying out to God.
We've worked on it a bit since then and it's become kind of a feature."

* * * + + MORE THAN A SONG - Words and
Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Favorite
rock anthem of this reviewer. Terrific signature song of the band which states
their heart attitude and priority - Pleasing the Lord. Verses are blues rock at
its finest, complete with syncopated rhythms, impressive guitar work and riff
sections and the choruses are rip roaring rock- full of energy, zing, and spirit,
with a chorus of band members singing their statement of faith, by the last time
through the chorus.
From the first measure,
driving rock-blues, dotted note syncopated sound, carried by the electric guitars
and drums, sets the stage for this energetic, passionate statement of faith, whose
tempo and spirit really cooks along. Lead vocals are stellar, and back up vocals
in the chorus add color as well.
Most enjoyable
changes in dynamics and musical segues are well done, especially from the BRIDGE
into the CHORUS and from the wonderful guitar riff into the VAMP. Vamp begins
quietly with just the vocals, bass and light drum sticks, but grows dynamically
in spirit and sound, into a glorious sound climax in the victorious Tag, which
ends in a guitar blues soft riff.
Also changes
in musical styles from blues rock in the verses into full blown energetic rock
in the choruses were all flawlessly performed and quite enjoyable.
Composition
and vocals are the perfect musical vehicle to express the poignant lyrics - Especially
love the chorus!! This song really showcases the
talent, passion, energy, and faith of the band, and it is no wonder this song earned
them recognition in Britain.
* David Painter's
Intro / Comments: "This song has changed drastically
since we originally played. We worked hard during the recording process on the
arrangement and I think that most of our musical influences are evident here at
some point or another. The lyrics encapsulate the vision of the band. King David
was described by God as having a heart after His own and this is what we want
more than anything. In the chorus, ('most of all I want a heart that gives You
joy, more than a song'), we're basically saying that pleasing God is more important
to us than our ambitions with the band."

Lyrics:
I'd
love to give You praise that would worthy of Your name / I'd love to manifest
Your presence in this life again / To celebrate Your beauty Lord / Oh what else
could I do / To see the King of glory come for there is none like You.
Chorus
1: I could live like a King and have everything / But I'd still need Your love
/ I could live like the poor / I'd simply need more / But I'd still need Your
love.
Bridge: I'd love to sing
a song that would give glory to Your Son / That we might see you dancing in heaven
/ To see you shake the earth / Oh let your spirit fall on us/ That we might know
the riches of heaven.
Chorus 2: But most of
all, I want a heart that gives You joy / More than a song / more than a song /
I wanna heart that gives You joy / More than a song / more than a song.
I
wanna tell it to the world / How nothing's been the same / Since you took my heart
/ took my soul / Got inside my brain / I'll celebrate your beauty Lord / What
else could I do / to see the king of glory come / For there is none like you.
Chorus
1:
Bridge: I'd love to sing
a song that would give glory to Your Son / That we might see you dancing in heaven
/ To see you shake the earth / Oh let your spirit fall on us/ That we might know
the riches of heaven /heaven...heaven....................
Chorus
2: But most of all, I want a heart that gives You joy / More than a song / more
than a song / I wanna heart that gives You joy / More than a song / more than
a song.
VAMP: I am full of praise / I am full
of praise / I am full of praise / I am full of praise / For You / I am full of
praise / I am full of praise / I am full of praise / I am full of praise / I am
full of praise / I am full of praise / I am full of praise / I am full of praise
/ For You / I am full of praise / I am full of praise / I am full of praise /
I am full of praise.
Chorus 2:
More
than a song / more than a song / more than a song / I wanna heart that gives You
Joy - More than a song / more than a song / I wanna heart that gives You joy.
Joy! /Joy! / Joy! Joy! / Joy! Joy! YEAH!

* * + I CAN HEAR - Words and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Lovely
acoustic worship hymn with a peppy spirit, heartfelt vocals, offering the usually
great dynamics, memorable melody, meaningful lyrics, and a glorious refrain, perfect
for any contemporary service or a personal worship time. Electric guitar begins
the intro, playing delicately its broken chord counter melody and then is joined
by acoustic guitars who help to carry melody throughout. During first verse, and
half way through the second verse the acoustic guitars and the poignant vocals
are the main force in the compositions, providing a spirit of heartfelt worship
and gratitude. The electric guitar joins in the second half of the 2nd verse.
Dynamics grow throughout the refrain, quieting down again for 2nd verse.
*
David Painter's Intro / Comments: "I wrote most
of the lyrics for this when I was 16. Martyn came up with the riff while we were
preparing for our first ever gig and I started singing the words over the top
and they just fit. It is a prophetic song inspired by a group of guys who came
to a Bible week with my dad's church back in the mid-'90's. There were five of
them and they had been allowed out of drug-rehab for the week so that they could
attend. They were all addicts who had led ganster-like lifestyles and were as
hard as nails. By the end of the week, all 5 were saved and I have a lasting memory
of watching them standing in the aisles with their hands raised worshipping God.
It was surreal but amazing nonetheless. The line: 'You have called the weak and
the broken; I can hear their song' was written with this experience still fresh

Lyrics:
I
can hear the angels singing / Of your love to come / I believe, I believe in Your
word, Lord / And all that You've done / In Your name I will enter / Your courts
of praise / I will know you through my worship / All of my days.
I
have seen what You have done / What You have given me / I receive, I receive a
glimpse of heaven / Oh what mercy / In Your name I will heal / And tell of Your
Son / You have called the weak and the broken / Can you hear their song? //
Refrain:
Holy, holy is the Lord / Holy, holy is the Lord / Holy, holy is the Lord / Holy,
holy is the Lord.
I can hear the songs of
heaven / I can feel the music move through the air now / Let me know the heart
of my Father / Show me the place and I will meet you there. (Repeat)
I
have seen what you have done / What you have given me / I forsee, I forsee a life
in heaven / Eternally / In Your name I am healed / I've been made Your son / You
have called me weak and broken / Can You hear my song?
Holy,
holy is the Lord / Holy, holy is the Lord / Holy, holy is the Lord / Holy, holy
is the Lord.
I can hear the songs of heaven
/ I can feel the music move through the air now / Let me know the heart of my
Father / Show me the place and I will meet you there. (Repeat)
Show
me the place and I will meet you there, I will meet you there.

* * + I NEED TO SEE YOU - Words and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly
Band.
A musically interesting, spiritually inspiring
alternative rock prayer hymn with a touch of blues written in a minor key with
a light rock beat, a very busy bass part, peppy guitar work, nice syncopation
in the refrain, the usually great dynamics and very different melody carried
by edgy-style vocals with include hard intervals sung flawlessly by David, who
puts his heart and soul into this performance.
Enjoyed
the dynamic musical segue interlude from verses into the refrain, as energy goes
up a notch in the refrain. Also enjoyed the guitar interlude after the last time
through the refrain. The bass pumps away while the lead guitar plays a blues-rock
solo.
This prayer hymn is a unique listening
experience, aimed at providing a spirit of worship and prayer in an alternative
rock genre.
David Painter's Intro /
Comments: "This song is the most recently written.
In the late '90's, early '00's, the UK experienced a move of the Holy Spirit that
blessed the church and really increased expectation for revival. It was a very
intense time and for whatever reason it came to an end. I think written partly
out of frustration but mainly a hunger to see God move again.

Lyrics:
I
need to see you here right now / I just don't want to pretend / Cause in your
presence my heart cowers / In case it's contents might offend / And you are worthy
of so much more / I just cannot be that good / To taste the sweetness of your
mercy / I would drown my sins on blood.
I
need to feel you here right now / I just want you by my side / The universe can
make me wonder / Is there no place I can hide? / I hear Your voice call from the
ether / I sometimes feel You in my skin / I need You hear now, more than ever
/ Where I end, may You begin.
Bridge: Don't
you know, Don't you know.................
Refrain:
I tried with the strength I had to stand / I gave of the best I had to find /
I strived just to be a better man / But without You, I don't think I can.
I
need to see you here right now / I just don't want to pretend / Cause in your
presence my heart cowers / In case it's contents might offend / And you are worthy
of so much more / I just cannot be that good / To taste the sweetness of your
mercy / I would drown my sins on blood.
Don't

* * + + + LIGHT OF DAY - Words and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Favorite
praise and worship acoustic rock song of this reviewer on this CD - and of all
time! What a high energy, spirited roof raisin' to the wall acoustic - blues rock
musical performance which will get any audience and the listener dancing around
the room in praise and thanksgiving. Song begins running full throttle in energy
and spirit with a sizzling harmonica bluesy effort and enthusiastic acoustic guitar
ensemble, playing a dotted note / syncopated rhythm which really flies - Didn't
know acoustic guitars could play at that tempo! WOW! Speaks volumes of the talent
of the guitarists, under the influence of the Holy Spirit!
Enjoyed
the great guitar riffs, the addition of spirited harmonica player throughout the
song.
Vocals are equally impressive in energy
and joyous praise, expressing the message of what a wonderful Lord we have. By
the 2nd time through the chorus, everyone in the band is singing adding to
the dynamic conclusion.
David Painter's Intro / Comments: "We play this
song acoustically live and it works really well because it has a lot of energy
and I can run around the stage a bit. We went to town a bit on the recording and
brought in a friend of ours, Stef, to play harmonica - which I think sounds great.
It’s essentially a song of praise about the divinity of Christ."

* * * + WHATEVER
- Words and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Another
uplifting, musically interesting, hopeful light rock worship anthem with a strong
melody, poignant vocals and great use of dynamics which encourages the listener
as it points out the faithfulness and goodness of our Lord. Begins quietly with
acoustic guitar broken chords and mellow, smooth vocals, building into the victorious
chorus, which quiets down for the 2nd verse.
Enjoyed
the guitar and Bass work in the verses and the chorus, musical contrasts and interludes,
played in the energetic GLASS DARKLY style, whether quietly or more joyous in
manner.
David Painter's Intro /
Comments: "It is a song for the days when you
get up out of the wrong side of the bed."

* * + + PERFECT LOVE - Words and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band.
Favorite
prayer hymn of this reviewer. A glorious uplifting prayer hymn with a beautiful,
memorable melody, well-written composition and vocals which so meaningfully express
the spirit of the message. Begins reverently and solemnly with smooth vocals,
synths keyboard, light drumstick rhythm, a single guitar playing a delicate counter
melody, setting the mood for worship, which segues quickly into a more lively
bridge, as the rest of guitars, keyboard and more drums join in this hymn, adding
energy but still maintaining the mood of prayerful worship, which captivates the
listener, drawing the soul into worship.
Vocals
are most enjoyable showing a heart for worship and a spirit for praising the Lord.
VAMP is truly special.
* David Painter's Intro / Comments: "This is probably our most popular song
in churches at the moment. It has traveled without us in the sense that we hear
of people using it in places we’ve never been. I am really proud of the production
we did with this one because we worked really hard on it. We were unsure how it
was going to turn out initially because it was tough getting the right kind of
energy in the chorus. We brought in three girls from our church to sing on the
track and I remember getting tingles down the spine when I heard it after the
initial mix. We won Premier Christian Radio Song Search for best song of the year
with this one."

You
are full / of the grace that sets me free to delight in Your truth / You are pure,
clothed in righteousness / that's why I adore You my Lord / You are all that I've
ever needed / Your ways are just, right and true / Perfect love / that I have
received and forevermore I want You.
Bridge:
No greater love has there been / Than when You laid down Your life for a friend
/ You became the hope of the world / On that day like a lamb You were slain.
Refrain:
And now, in a moment You take my breath away / For You are the love of my life
/ And I can't deny You of my praise.
You

can't deny You of my praise //And now, in a moment You take my breath away, my
breath away / For You are the love of my life / And I can't deny You of my praise.
VAMP: Refrain is sung with: You are everything
to me / When the world caves in beneath my feet You remain the same / You are
everything to me / When my dreams come crashing 'round my head You remain the
same.
* * * + + KING OF THE WORLD - Words and
Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band
This well done, solemn ballad is the prayer of a repentant person seeking to get
back on tract with the Lord. As he seeks the Lord, the Lord responds in mercy,
resulting in a victorious rock segment, in the VAMP. Poignant melody and vocals
are written in a minor key in the beginning, perfect vehicle for the first and
second verse and chorus. Dynamics build in the composition and the vocals through
to the VAMP, which erupts into some very fine rock, but quiets down at the end
to a very nice effect, signifying that this person at the end has a sense of peace.
Martyn Casserly gives a truly inspiring electric guitar riff in the end solo section
in the VAMP.
David Painter's Intro / Comments: "One of my
favorites on the album purely because of the music. It starts out as ethereal
ballad and morphs into an almighty rock fest. It’s about the fragility of man
and the greatness of God."

* * * + + YOURS - Words
and Music by David Painter & Glass Darkly Band
Strong
favorite of this reviewer - perfect song to end the CD. A truly, lovely acoustic
altar call hymn, calling believers and seekers to love the Lord and be living
sacrifices every day. A song which would find a home in just about any denominational
service. Begins very smoothly with a guitar accompanying the clear vocals of David,
which express so well the message of the lyrics.

David Painter's Intro / Comments: "This is a
song about repentance really. When I’ve sung this song recently I’ve had a picture
of a well. It’s an analogy for Gods eternal source of grace and mercy freely given
to us. It’s easy to feel at times that you’ve made and your walk with God is a
stroll but pride creeps in and you’re suddenly in trouble. I think that no matter
how together we can appear to be on the outside, the important thing is that we
keep coming back, keep drawing from the well and keep offering ourselves to God
as living sacrifices on a daily basis. Appearances can certainly be quite deceptive
especially on a Sunday morning when everybody is saying their “Amens” with their
hands in the air and there is a pressure to put on a front."
